The Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris is currently hosting the exhibition “Fashion and Sports: From one Podium to Another” until April 7, 2024. This comprehensive showcase delves into the historical intersections between fashion and sports, covering a vast timeline from ancient times to the contemporary era. The extensive collection of 450 items includes clothing, accessories, photographs, sketches, magazines, posters, paintings, sculptures, and videos, providing a rich visual narrative of the evolution of sportswear and its profound impact on modern fashion. Curated by Sophie Lemahieu, the guardian of the museum’s post-1947 Fashion and Textiles Collections, the vibrant exhibition design comes courtesy of BGC Studio

Structured chronologically with thematic sections, the exhibition explores various facets of the relationship between fashion and sports. It delves into the origins of sportswear and highlights the influence of iconic designers such as Jean Patou and Elsa Schiaparelli during the interwar years. The presentation meticulously traces the historical development of sports attire, encompassing the rise of gymnastics, team sports, and innovations in swimwear.

The second half of the 20th century takes center stage as the exhibition underscores the widespread integration of sportswear into everyday fashion. This shift is attributed to influences from bodybuilding, aerobics, and collaborative efforts between designers and sports figures. The role of color and logos in fashion is emphasized, showcasing exceptional pieces like a Lacoste polo shirt composed entirely of crocodile logos.

The exhibition concludes with a contemporary fashion “running track,” serving as a symbolic tribute to the Olympics. This immersive space features designs inspired by notable sports figures such as Zinedine Zidane and Naomi Osaka. Overall, the exhibition aims to celebrate the inseparable connection between fashion and sports, inviting visitors to reflect on their shared history and consider the potential for ongoing collaborations between these influential domains.
