The History and Story of Mikawa Cotton
The Birthplace of Cotton Textiles in Japan: Mikawa, Aichi Prefecture
Soft yet durable, Mikawa cotton originates from the Mikawa region of Aichi Prefecture, the birthplace of cotton textiles in Japan. According to ancient texts such as *Ruijū Kokushi* and *Nihon Kōki*, in the year 799, Konronjin (believed to be Indian sailors) drifted ashore in Fukuchi Village, Hazu District, Aichi Prefecture (modern-day Nishio City). They brought cotton seeds and taught the villagers how to cultivate cotton, marking the introduction of cotton to Japan.
During the Edo period, Mikawa became a hub for cotton cultivation and weaving. Textiles known as *Sanpaku Cotton* were shipped to Edo (modern-day Tokyo). Renowned for their durability, these textiles were used for obi cores, tabi soles, work trousers, and noren curtains. Mikawa cotton also gained prominence as a luxury item, gifted to Kyoto’s nobility. By the Meiji period, cotton production evolved from a small-scale, secondary occupation into a large-scale industry. Incorporating Western techniques, brands like “Mikawa Cotton” and “Mikawa Stripes” gained national recognition.
Today, Mikawa cotton remains celebrated for its exceptional quality. In addition to traditional garments like *hanten* and *kimono*, it is also used for modern products such as shirts, hats, and bedding. In February 2007, Mikawa cotton was designated as a regional brand of Aichi Prefecture, ensuring its legacy and promoting further development.

The Craftsmanship Behind SASICCO Bags
The first prototype of a SASICCO bag originated from a martial arts uniform craftsman who repurposed leftover fabric from kendo uniforms to create a personal eco-bag. Since that initial creation, every step of the process—from design to fabric cutting, sewing, and finishing—has been meticulously handled by SASICCO’s in-house craftsmen.
The precise stitching highlights the unique texture of the sashiko weave fabric, while the bags remain lightweight yet sturdy, maintaining their shape over time. These qualities are a testament to the exceptional skill of the artisans, and anyone who holds a SASICCO bag can instantly recognize its superior quality.
Each SASICCO bag is the result of a collaborative process, where artisans exchange ideas and make repeated refinements before finalizing the design. Because every bag is crafted with care and attention to detail, production is limited. SASICCO firmly believes that maintaining the artisans’ dedication to quality and usability is essential to creating superior products. SASICCO will continue to prioritise exceptional quality and craftsmanship, delivering timeless products made with the utmost care.
