The Story Behind the Ring

Sometimes in life we feel lost, as though we’re drifting in a vast ocean with no clear direction. This ring is a reminder that even in those moments, there is always a light to guide us home.

The gemstones are set using a traditional jewellery technique called star setting. Tiny star-shaped engravings are carved into the metal, allowing each stone to be held within a star. Inspired by the Big Dipper, a constellation that has guided travellers and sailors for centuries, the design symbolises hope, guidance, and finding your way home.

From Curator to Creator — A Conversation with Wen Hsieh

Exploring the connection between sculptural jewellery, personal stories and meaningful craftsmanship.

1. Could you introduce yourself and share your creative philosophy?

I’m Wen Hsieh, the Founder and Creative Director of AVANTELIER, a London-based platform dedicated to independent designers and craftsmanship.

Alongside my work as a curator, I have always been drawn to creating things with my hands. Jewellery allows me to express emotions, memories and personal experiences through wearable objects.

My creative philosophy is centred on individuality, meaningful design and the beauty of imperfection. I believe jewellery should be more than decoration — it should carry a story and create a personal connection with its wearer.

2. What inspired you to begin creating your own jewellery?

I’ve always had a passion for art and creative expression. For me, creating is a way to translate emotions, personal experiences and stories into something tangible.

I studied Fashion Design at university, where I also chose to take an additional course in metalsmithing. I remember finding the process both fascinating and challenging. Working with metal requires patience, precision and experimentation, but I was drawn to the possibilities of transforming a rigid material into something expressive and sculptural.

My background in fashion has also influenced the way I approach jewellery. I see jewellery not simply as an accessory, but as a form of wearable art that can express individuality and carry personal meaning.

Through my creations, I hope to transform emotions and stories into meaningful pieces that resonate with the people who wear them.
3. How has your experience as a curator influenced your approach to jewellery design?

Curating AVANTELIER has allowed me to discover different perspectives, materials and techniques from designers around the world.

It has taught me to appreciate not only the finished piece, but also the thought, experimentation and craftsmanship behind it.

As a designer, I try to approach each creation with the same curiosity and openness. Rather than following trends, I focus on developing pieces that feel personal, expressive and enduring.

4. Could you share the inspiration behind your Wave Star-Set Blue Topaz Ring?

Have you ever felt lost in life? Unsure whether you’ve made the right decision, what comes next, or which direction to take?

Sometimes, life feels like drifting on the ocean, carried by the waves without knowing where they might lead.

This feeling inspired my Wave Star-Set Blue Topaz Ring. The flowing silver form represents life’s unpredictable waves, while the star-set blue topaz gemstones symbolise the guiding stars in the night sky.

Inspired by the Big Dipper, a constellation that has helped travellers and sailors navigate for centuries, the stars remind us that even when we feel lost, there is always hope and a direction to follow.

For me, this ring is a reminder to embrace life’s uncertainties, trust the journey, and believe that even when we are drifting with the waves, the stars can guide us towards where we belong.

5. Can you tell us about the materials and techniques used in your jewellery?

I enjoy working with sterling silver because of its versatility and the way it can be shaped into expressive, sculptural forms.

Each piece is handcrafted in London, where I explore the relationship between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design.

For the Wave Star-Set Ring, I used solid 925 sterling silver and blue topaz gemstones, incorporating the traditional star-setting technique.

Tiny star-shaped engravings are created around the gemstones, making each stone appear as though it is held within a star.

I am particularly interested in combining traditional jewellery-making techniques with organic forms and contemporary design, creating pieces that feel both artistic and personal.

6. What role does sustainability play in your creative practice?

Through AVANTELIER, I have always advocated for thoughtful consumption and a greater appreciation of craftsmanship.

I want to carry these values into my own jewellery practice by focusing on considered design, quality materials and pieces intended to be treasured rather than replaced.

For me, sustainability also means creating jewellery with lasting emotional value — something people choose to keep, repair and wear for years.

7. How do you approach creating jewellery that transcends trends?

I believe timelessness comes from authenticity rather than simplicity alone.

A piece can be bold, unconventional or sculptural and still remain meaningful over time.

Instead of designing around seasonal trends, I begin with a feeling, memory or concept. I then explore how that idea can take physical form through metal, gemstones and texture.

My hope is that each piece becomes part of the wearer’s personal story.
