MANIFESTO

Individuality — Craftsmanship — Sustainability

The fashion industry is known for its fast-paced nature. How do you approach designing timeless pieces that transcend trends?
Each piece is individually crafted, resulting in subtle variations that make every design unique. This meticulous approach requires additional time, but it is valued by those who choose to invest in jewellery that outlasts passing trends.

Lastly, could you share a personal mantra or motto that keeps you inspired to continue creating and advocating for sustainable fashion?
Stay true to yourself and your values.

Could you provide a brief introduction about yourself and your creative ethos?
Hi, I’m Jo Cooper. Individuality in personal style is very important to me, which is why I create one-of-a-kind pieces and small-batch jewellery for those who share this value. I enjoy exploring both traditional and unconventional jewellery-making techniques, allowing each design to reflect creativity and distinctiveness.

Can you share the story behind Jo Cooper Jewellery?
From a young age, I have had a strong passion for making and creating, which naturally led to a fusion of my interests in craftsmanship and personal style. This combination inspired me to design jewellery that I could not find elsewhere.
I went on to study at Camberwell College, University of the Arts London, where I learnt how to silversmith and do enamelling. I particularly enjoy trying out and combining diverse methods and materials to produce original designs, and after extensive refinement, this approach led to the creation of Jo Cooper Jewellery.

Could you walk us through your jewellery production process and highlight some key stages?
I work with a combination of traditional and non-traditional jewellery-making techniques. For my raw gemstone rings, I use a process known as electroforming, which creates their distinctive, organically textured surface. Electroforming involves the use of electrolysis to deposit a layer of metal – pure silver in the case of my work – onto an object. I begin by constructing the ring in sterling (925) silver, before electroforming it for a minimum of eight hours to build up a substantial layer of fine (999) silver over the base. I am particularly drawn to this method because of its unpredictability; the texture develops naturally during the process, ensuring that each ring is entirely unique.

What are Jo Cooper Jewellery’s future sustainability goals?
It is important to me to create each piece of jewellery from scratch in my UK-based studio, ensuring it meets the high standards of quality and durability that I value. I am committed to working in contrast to fast fashion and mass production, focusing instead on small-batch creation and the use of recycled silver to promote a more thoughtful and sustainable approach.

Can you describe a standout piece from your latest collection?
My latest collection is inspired by the Lunar New Year of the Horse, featuring a limited series of pieces centred around a horseshoe shape. A standout design within the collection is a bold, statement horseshoe necklace, set with seven raw gemstones. The piece showcases a vibrant and eclectic palette, including deep red, pink, green, yellow, and purple tones, reflecting my appreciation for dynamic colour combinations and expressive design.
